Stumbleupon: Power Stumbling

April 21st, 2009

There’s no doubt that Stumbleupon can give you fantastic traffic. It can give you that big traffic boost that can increase your website income and help you increase your exposure. Stumbleupon is a two way street though, you only get as much as you put in it. This is why I spend time every few days doing what I call power stumbling.

Power stumbling is a way to build both your reputation on Stumbleupon as well as learn about new and interesting sites. Best of all, it takes just 30 minutes or so per session.

Ready to do some power stumbling? Make sure you have the Stumbleupon bar installed. Next, go into the options and add just about every topic you are interested in. Make sure you do have your niche interests listed so that you’ll be served up pages that might relate to your niche. Next open a text editor like Crimson Editor or notepad to take down notes as you are power stumbling. With everything set up, you can start stumbling.

Open 3 or 4 blank tabs, and then in each tab, click on the stumble button. With three or four tabs open at the same time, it’s easy check out one page while waiting for the others to pull up. It really makes your time spent more efficient.

Once a page is pulled up, it’s time to evaluate it. Do you honestly like the page? If so, give it a thumbs up. Do you absolutely hate the page? Give it a thumbs down. Don’t be afraid to give a site a thumbs down if it deserves it. Generally if I am somewhere in between, I just click on the stumble button to be given a new page. I don’t believe in cracking someone’s rice bowl unless they really deserve it. Remember, Stumbleupon is a great tool for discovering great content and it’s only as good as the ratings given.

Ok, what to do if you like the page? If the page is particularly interesting or if it has given you something to blog about, copy and paste the link in your text editor and write up a quick one or two lines about it so that you’ll remember why you listed it and why you liked it. Sure Stumbleupon has your favorites list, but it’s a bit cumbersome to find them all after several days of power stumbling.

Whether you liked it or not, just click on the Stumble button and get a fresh page. If you are power stumbling with 3 or 4 tabs, you can stumble a lot of pages in 30 minutes or so. The more stumbles you make, the more power your own stumbles have. More power = more traffic.

But power stumbling is about more than just more traffic, it’s about the blogging ideas you get while stumbling. After you have finished your power stumbling session, take a few minutes to look at the notes you have. Odds are that you’ll have several blog post ideas just from the sites you stumbled. This is probably why I do a lot of my power stumbling when I am short on writing or blogging ideas.
